Looking back on 2024 for DBmarlin

Looking back on 2024 for DBmarlin

As we approach Christmas 2024, it is time to look back at what we have achieved with DBmarlin over the last year. It has been a year filled with growth, innovation, and exciting partnerships. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the product features we have introduced and the valuable partnerships we have formed to enhance the DBmarlin experience.

Some of the new features we added in 2024

Throughout the year, we have introduced several new product features to empower you in monitoring and managing your database environments. Here are just some of the highlights.

  1. AI Co-pilot - DBmarlin was the first Database observability solution to offer AI generated recommendations for things such as wait event tuning or SQL tuning. Co-pilot is natively built into the DBmarlin UI and can be accessed from any screen in the product, acting as an expert that is alway on-hand to answer the hard questions or simply save you time.

  2. SAP HANA - We added support for SAP HANA which is the database that sits behind the industry-leading SAP S/4HANA enterprise resource planning (ERP) system used around the world.

  3. Informix support - We added support for Informix which is a database with a long history, created in the mid-1980s and later acquired by IBM in 2001.

  4. Authentication and RBAC - You can now fully secure your DBmarlin server and define users as admin or standard users and grant access to only the database instances they need to see.

  5. Multiple UI improvements - such as ‘drag to zoom’

  6. Lots of platform specific improvements - For example:
    1. SQL Server - TempDB monitoring, new DB statistics such as Page Life Expectancy, host metrics via SQL.
    2. CockroachDB - Transaction contention monitoring, collection of more execution plans, index recommendations.
    3. IBM Db2 - Host metrics via SQL, support for Db2 Warehouse on cloud.
    4. PostgreSQL - GCP and RDS support, execution plans for SQL with complex data types.
  7. AWS CloudWatch - For Amazon AWS customers running RDS (Relational Database Service) we can now get the host level metrics such as CPU and Memory via the CloudWatch API and show the metrics on the Hosts screen.

  8. CockroachDB Transaction Contention - This reveals which transactions and SQL statements are involved in contention. DBmarlin highlights these as blocking and waiting SQL statements.

  9. ServiceNow integration - DBmarlin is now able to send alerts to ServiceNow. ServiceNow is a cloud-based platform that provides a suite of software tools for IT service management (ITSM), IT operations management (ITOM), and other business process automation.

  10. SAP ASE support - We added support for SAP ASE (formerly Sybase), which now brings the list of support database platforms to 10, which is a milestone for DBmarlin on our journey so far.

Valuable partnerships and collaborations

At DBmarlin, we believe in the power of collaboration and partnerships. Throughout the year, we have formed valuable partnerships with industry-leading organisations to enhance the DBmarlin experience. Here are some noteworthy partnerships:

  1. IBM: Our relationship with IBM has grown stronger this year. We presented at multiple IBM events as speakers and sponsors such as Tech Exchange in Dublin and Tech Exchange webinar Nov. And the integration from Instana to DBmarlin is now natively built into Instana since R285 and no longer requires the Chrome extension.

  2. Harness:: In today’s fast-paced development environments, database changes often remain the Achilles’ heel of DevOps processes. This year Harness launched their new ‘Database Devops’ solution at their Unscripted events and DBmarlin was the first to integrate before its release. DBmarlin and Harness Database DevOps is so powerful because it enables seamless, risk-mitigated database changes alongside robust performance insights. Check out the video here to see both products in action demonstrated by Stephen Atwell, the Harness product manager for Database DevOps.

  3. Splunk Observability Cloud: We updated our Chrome extension to inject a button inside Splunk Observability (formerly SignalFx) to link SQL statements within a trace to the database perspective of the same SQL within DBmarlin where you can see the execution plans, wait events and SQL Statistics and use AI-Copilot to provide tuning recommendations.

These partnerships, have allowed us to bring you an enhanced DBmarlin experience and provide you with the tools you need to succeed in supporting your critical databases.

As we reflect on the year gone by, we are proud of the achievements we have made with DBmarlin. The introduction of new product features and the formation of valuable partnerships have been instrumental in our growth and success. We would like to express our gratitude to our customers, partners, and the entire DBmarlin community for their support and trust in our product. We look forward to another year of innovation and collaboration to continue empowering you in monitoring and managing your database environments.
